When we opened Banks & Brown in February 2019 the ZZ was a quiet achiever. Already popular around the world for it’s ability to do it’s own thing it is now one of our most recommended, top selling plants. “Thrives on neglect” is often printed on the original nursery tag and we can’t think of a better description for caring for a ZZ.
The ZZ grows upright shoots that emerge as a lime green & then gradually age to a deep green over time. More recently another variety known as 'Jungle Warrior' or 'Black ZZ' has become popular. The clue for why this plant can happily sit in the corner untouched, unwatered & somewhat neglected (but still look amazing!) lies under the soil. New growth emerges from large rhizomes under the soil & they are capable of holding moisture for extended periods. This is why the best way to kill this plant is to keep watering it! If it’s left in wet soil that has poor drainage it will most likely rot where the wet soil sits against the plant.
We’ve kept ZZ’s in the shop without watering them for several months without issue.

Plant Notes : A beautiful upright growing specimen perfect for most indoor environments. In the warmer months you may need to water every 4-5 weeks depending on the position. If the plant begins to ‘sag’ it is probably thirsty. Consider a liquid fertiliser a couple of times a year when you are already watering it. Over winter just leave it alone.
