Select me for : Striking upright patterned growth.
Indoor Light Needs : From very low right through to bright filtered.
Definitely an under-rated family of plants. One of the easiest ‘houseplants’ that you could possibly find. While there are many different varieties available we consider the care required the same across the board. In warmer climates you’ll see these plants used extensively in landscapes & rooftop gardens. In Adelaide & Melbourne however our winter temperatures drop too low & can wreak havoc on these beautiful plants. They can be used outside but need to be up against a wall or under a pergola to protect from those winter chills & burning summer sun.
Bring them indoors and the choice is yours. From a dark entranceway or hallway right through to a bright living space or alfresco area. They are considered slow growing & this can generally be true in the cooler months. If they are in a warm spot new growth will emerge and reward you with brighter colours which darken with age.
Water: This is up there with the ZZ in terms of minimal water needs. Rarely if ever do we end up soaking these. Once the soil is completely dry & the foliage is slightly soft to touch then a good drink is in order. That being said we have plants that sit happily for months at a time without needing a drink. The more you learn to understand your plants the more success you are going to have.
Plant Notes : Larger plants make an amazing feature in a corner. These look particularly satisfying when grouped in different sizes & varieties of the Sansevieria.
